I am humbled by your feedback -THANK YOU

During the pre-launch of the book "From the Rat Race to Financial Freedom", i was circulating copies of the book to some renowned personalities and known contacts in my network so that i could get some feedback and reviews. The response was overwhelming.
But what has truly humbled me is the response from all those "unknown" and "young" readers who are not obliged to send me any review comments, whom i do not know and who have no reason to write an email to me.

Source or Sink

There is a hero in each one of us !!

The fact is that most of us are looking for some heroes in life, someone whom we can follow, someone whom we admire, someone whom we know is making a difference out there in the world "in spite" of all the challenges and is not sitting down and out "because of" all the reasons, someone who can show us the direction.

Implement the change that you want to see

Yes, we must listen, read, see, visualize, learn, understand and also appreciate the things the way they ought to be, but we must also remember that for any change to happen, you must take a very important next step and that is "to act" towards the change that you want to see in the world around you.

Very often, we spend a lot of time in all the aspects of reading, listening, visualizing, understanding but just halt at the step of "acting". While all of these is important, failure to act turns out to be the single biggest reasons why your ideas and thoughts do not take the shape of reality.

Are you blindly following everyone around you?

"Go with the crowd" mentality is so typical in any corporate work environment. It is also not uncommon to notice this in our personal lives. You will see people just following what people around them have been doing for many years, sometimes, not even knowing the rationale behind what they are doing and why.

There was a real experiment (scientific study) done involving 5 monkeys (10 altogether, including replacements), a cage, a banana, a ladder and an ice cold water hose. Some of you may have heard about this experiment before, but the fact that this was a real experiment amazes me every time i read this story and relate the same to the real world.

Life is a journey towards a destination

Nothing can be more true than the age old saying: "Life is a journey and not a destination". This saying is so relevant because if you have not enjoyed your journey of life, you are in for a hollow sense of achievement after you reach your destination. You will spend a major part of your life in the journey towards some of your goals and a minute fractional little in savoring the destination. Hence, it makes so much more sense to lay emphasis on the journey rather than the destination.

Well, if that is the fact, then why are we so hung up about

14 ways to know if you are stuck in the rat-race and 1 way to come out

Many of my friends and colleagues understand that they should not be in a Rat Race for the rest of their lives. But in most cases, confusion harbingers clarity. How would any of them know whether they are on the right path in their life or they are also a part of this dreaded and mindless rat race?

The irony is that most of them are in the rat race and don't even know this. If i tell them the fact on the face, no one is going to believe me. On the other hand, i am also shirking my duty as a friend if i am not letting them know that they are a part of this vicious circle which has no end. I want that they should have a fair opportunity to come out of this race. They will keep running throughout their life and in the end would not achieve anything substantial to be proud of. They ought to take decisions and do something different in their lives else the time is running out for them. They can make an impact on this world, it is just that they need to wake up to the fact that they are also a victim of how we were brought up in our society. They need to take charge of their lives before it is too late.

Faced with this dilemma, i thought of giving a list of symptoms of being stuck in a Rat Race. How do i know these symptoms? I have been through each one of them at some point in my life, and so i have a first hand experience. These symptoms will help anyone find out whether they are also running this meaningless race. So, here we go..

If you face one or more of the following situations in your personal or professional life, you are very likely running a Rat Race - a race which may not yield anything worthwhile in the end in spite of all the hard work you are putting in.

1. You work long hours at a job you are not truly passionate about.
You may have friends at your workplace, you may be able to work through your day happily but do you truly get charged up by thinking about what you do at your job everyday? Does each morning bring excitement to you when you think about your work? There is a very simple way to find out whether you are truly passionate about your work or not. Assume for a moment that you do not have any financial worries in your life. Would you still opt to go to your workplace everyday even if it does not pay you anything ? If the answer is No, then you are surely a victim of this social setup which trains you to be a rat in this rat race. You better try and find a mission of your life. You are working hard but you do not know where you are headed. It is just like driving a car at a great speed but don't know where to go. It is like paying any game with no target in mind, which would ensure victory. What will happen if you keep doing what you are doing today? You life will end up in frustration and you will not achieve anything meaningful. You will only regret at the end of your life.

2. You hate traffic.
You are one of those who spend at least an hour commuting to and from office. I often hear my colleagues cribbing about it, but they wont do anything other than cribbing. They never start thinking about what they can do to change the situation. They are all driven by situations.

3. You worry about the next day at office.
At the end of the day, you do not fancy cooking. You just want to have a drink or have a dinner and go to bed, because you have a planned set of activities for the next day. Your mind is planning for the next day as you go to bed. You have stopped finding happiness in smaller things in life.

4. Hobbies !! What are they?
You used to have a few hobbies, which you feel, are a thing of the past. You may say that you would revive them some day but nothing is going to change unless you change what you do on an everyday basis.  If you look at the last few years, you have just gone busier by the day. The competition at your workplace just got a little more, as you climbed a few corporate ladders. To climb further, it needs more of your time and energy. With all this, who has the time to pursue the old hobbies, which you have come to believe are only a children's forte.

5. You have stopped finding happiness in smaller things.
With all the hours that you and your spouse work, you have forgotten the habit of doing things together. The joy of making a meal together, the joy of watching the TV together, the joy of playing with the kids together, the joy of just chatting and spending time together - all these do not seem to have a great value in your life anymore.

6. The children are more a burden than joy.
Kids want your time, not the jazzy toys. They can happily play with a broken and a shabby toy if you are ready to spend your time with them. Instead, we go the other way. We do not have time for them though we have money and are ready to buy a new fancy toy for them. Sad, doesn't work that way at all. The equation just needs to be reversed.

7. You feel that you are becoming more and more alienated from your family.
Family vacations, once or twice a year, is the only family time you spend with the joy, assuming you do not carry your office mobile or laptop with you during the vacation. You deserve the same joy everyday in your life.

8. You believe in TGIF.
TGIF (Thank God Its Friday) has become synonymous to your Freedom today. The excitement,  energy and bliss that you get on Friday evening are some of the traits of what a financially free person experiences everyday in life. How good would that life be?

9. Your weekend just flies by.
Come the weekend, by the time you have fixed the dripping tap, cleaned the messy areas of your house, done the grocery shopping, watched the TV soaps, caught up on washing and ironing, dealt with the paperwork in preparedness for Monday morning's presentation at your workplace, your weekend has gone. As it happens every week, it turned out to be an anti climax. You have to now wait for the weekend once again for another 5 days.

10. You are always connected.
There is no escape either on the weekdays or the weekends from some thread at your workplace because the new technology ensures that you can be intruded in any part of the world at any time of the day or the night.

11. You never have enough money.
You earn good money but it never seems to be quite enough. There is always something extra to buy - for your spouse, for your kid or for your house. The bills just drill a bigger hole in your pocket every month. You are always waiting for the next salary credit in your bank account. Perhaps, if you changed jobs or got the promotion or worked something extra, it would have helped you meet your expenses. Sad, but you know that this change is not going to help. It has not helped till now and is not likely to work in future also.

12. You have a lifestyle (disease).
Though long working hours have brought in a nice car, a nice house and a nice overall lifestyle, it is very likely to also bring stress, and with it , all the lifestyle diseases. It has helped you stay ahead of your friends, both in lifestyle and lifestyle diseases.

13. You don't know how to effectively deal with the money you earn.
You are earning a lot, but you are not dealing with what you are earning. You always seem to be short of time to think on how to invest and manage your money wisely. Sad but true, you leave your family and your health to earn money but do not know what to do with the money you earned. Isn't it sad and ironical ?

14. Your gadgets are more a stress than help.
You have accrued a lot of modern gadgets, with the assumption that would at least bring some comfort to your life, if not happiness. They definitely did bring excitement for some time. But as your greed for the latest gadget went spiraling up, you see yourself spend most of your weekend time dealing with these gadgets and the issues that come with them.

Now, if you sit back and think through all of the above points, you might feel like you are on a hamster treadmill. You are running hard, very hard, just to stay at the same place.

It is not necessary that you are experiencing all the above traits, but even if you are experiencing a few of them, you are a part of this race, which is self defeating.

You can continue to stay in this race as long as you want. It is a very comfortable zone, because you have got used to it. You can spend your entire life in this because that is what you see the colleagues around you doing. But in case you want your life to have a some meaning and do not want to regret at the end of your life, you need to come out of this race.

Financial Freedom provides one such way to come out of this race. I have shared my learning during my journey from rat race to financial freedom in a book with the same title. You will have to chart your own path and walk your own journey. You have to face your own challenges and you have to find your own ways to deal with your situations. But you can definitely reap the benefits from what i experienced and documented in the book.

Key is to take a decision and take the first step. Rest will follow. I wish you all the best

Cheers

Dream just a little more

Whenever i ask you to dream, do not take me wrong. Of course, you need to be practical as you go through your life. You also need to operate intelligently and plan your life well. It is also extremely important to use common sense before taking any decisions. Any foolish risks can definitely lead to some difficult consequences for you and your family. You also cannot be very selfish and just ignore your immediate responsibilities towards your family and society.

Having said all this, i also want to state that you should not be afraid of failures too. Do not regret the consequences of not living the life of your dream. That might just turn out to be the biggest regret of your life. Do not always be so reasonable and practical that

5 reasons why everyone will never get rich

"Happiness is a state of mind, and my mind stays in a healthy state if there is enough money in my pocket :)"
Don't worry, i just made this up. But this remains a fact with so many of us, at least definitely with me.

Is there anyone reading this article who hates money? If that is the case, then this article is not the best one for money haters like you. This article is for those who truly wish to get rich in life. When i say rich, i mean really wealthy. What you do with the money after getting rich is totally up to you, and is not the point of discussion in this article.

Most of us want to get rich, with a few exceptions. But then why is that 99% of the worlds population is not rich. Why only 1% could get really rich? What stops us from achieving a real wealthy status? We want it, isn't it? We work hard for money, then what is missing?

While i was shooting for my promotional video for my upcoming book, i realized that there are few key traits that we lack, which results in most of us living a life of mediocrity. I analyzed and summarized 5 key reasons for most of us not being able to become rich

1. Wealthiness does not strike us
The fact that we have been born and brought up in an environment where we have hardly seen rich people around us, makes us believe that its a norm not to be extremely wealthy and wealth comes only as an exception to the fortunate few. We never had rich friends, rich neighbors, rich colleagues at office. So, how am i supposed to be different? I am normal. I am as most of us are. It never strikes us that we can be truly wealthy irrespective of what surrounds us. We can be that "exception". We deserve to be rich.

2. We never "decide" to get wealthy
I love talking about this. Many of my friends come to me and ask me to list down the steps from 1 to 10 - whatever they need to follow so that they can get rich. Fine, i say, "Tell me your dream." They are confused with my response and re-iterate their wish to tell them the steps needed for achieving financial freedom. I have to keep reminding them that your dream is going to be your first step. If you have not yet identified a dream in your life, a single purpose in your life for which you are ready to sacrifice anything, you are not done with Step 1, and unless you are done with Step 1, all other steps are meaningless. In fact, all the subsequent steps after your dream are so common for everyone and available so easily in books and across multiple internet sites that anyone can learn from them and follow them. But your dream is something that will not be available anywhere else. It has to be searched and dug out from inside you. A dream would be something that excites you, that single purpose of your life that ignites you and makes you passionate about everything that you do. It took me 15 years to search for my own dream and purpose of life, but once i found it, financial freedom was a just a series of steps that took 7 years to execute. Most of us want to jump over the first step of identifying our true dream because identifying that takes time and effort. It takes a lot of time and lot of effort. Unfortunately, there is no short cut here.

3. We always have enough excuses
"I am too old to fight for my dream now", "I have a family to support and secure", "It is too early for me to talk about retirement or freedom", "I don't have time", "Money is not a very good thing to have", "Money cannot give you happiness", "I am busy", "Happiness is a state of mind",  etc etc etc....the list is endless. I only have one point to tell all my friends who have some "reason" for not getting wealthy - Either you can make excuses or you can make money, but not both. The choice is in your hands. the choices that you decide every day make your destiny.

4. We do not appreciate delayed gratification
Most of us understand the compound interest calculation but it is very rare for someone to truly appreciate the amazing power of compounding and delayed gratification, unless they have experienced it in life themselves. In this fast paced world, we are all looking for instant results, and if we do not see instant results, we want to change our goal itself. Well, nothing worthwhile in life can be achieved without spending enough time and effort. It takes time to get rich and the growth is exponential. You have to have patience in the first few years when it might seem that you would never reach the goal, and then suddenly you would start realizing the amazing exponential power of compounding. Do not quit your goal till the compounding power triggers off its magic.

5. We are all in our comfort zones
"Well, whats wrong with my life? It is going just fine...", said a fish to her peer, lying in the fish aquarium inside a house. Doesn't that sound familiar? Nothing wrong actually - they are being fed on time, they are being saved from their potential enemies, they are being taken care of with clean water - then why should they try anything different. Perhaps, they forgot the real meaning of life - to "live" and "experience" life and the situations it poses on you. It is a very similar story for most of us. We have got used so much to our comfort zones that it pains to make an extra effort to "live" life. Is it easy to come out of such a comfortable zone? No, not at all. Is it worthwhile? Definitely yes. what is "living" life unless you have your personal freedom in your hands.

So, while most of us want to get rich, only 1% of us who will learn the skill to manage the above 5 constraints, will actually get rich. It is a fact that not everyone can get rich...Rich would always be divided in the ratio of 1% to 99%.

But you can definitely decide the category you want to be in. The choice is in your hands !!

Cheers

Going to the Next Level

Over the weekend, lying aimlessly over a couch, I was watching my younger 9 year old daughter playing a strange sort of game with a glass of water and a small plastic toy.

She placed the small plastic toy (actually a very small car) inside a transparent empty glass of water and then she started pouring water into the glass slowly. As the water level was slowly rising in the glass, the small plastic car started floating in the glass. Since it was a transparent glass, she was having fun seeing the car go up in the glass. She stopped sometime while the water level had reached the middle of the glass. I asked her why did she stop? As with kids, they are always so honest and pure in their responses. She told me that she is tired of holding the jug from which she is slowly pouring water in the glass. I heard it and kept silent waiting for her to take the next step, if at all. I kept lying in the couch and tried to keep an eye on her next action. There she was, after 2-3 minutes, with the jug back in her hand. She had gathered enough courage once again to take her experiment forward. She picked up the jug and started pouring more water. I was also observing her face reaction as the water level and the car kept rising in the glass. As the car was moving up, her face was lighting up with excitement. And then, there came a point when the car reached the top and the glass was full with water. Any more water would just spill it. I thought that she would stop now. How wrong was I. My thinking was more based on what is the right thing to do as per me. But we all know kids. She did not stop. She kept pouring water and the water started to spill over. The car came out of the glass. Not bothering about who would clean the water spill, she took the car in her hand and went and gave it to her elder sister in the other room. Though i was a little upset with the water spill, i just controlled my anger and asked her why did she gave the car to her sister? She responded very politely that she had enough of playing  with the car and she would rather let someone else play with it. As she uttered these words, my anger started to calm down and i realised what a powerful lesson this experiment had with our lives.

We all come in this world full of excitement, courage and motivation. We all start filling the glass of our lives with the things that we feel would bring us happiness. We all feel that we need money to do that, and there is nothing wrong in that thinking. But somewhere in the middle of our lives, we get tired, demotivated and somehow unable to take our lives to the next level. Most of us are at this stage now. The glass of our lives is half full, the car is at the middle of the glass and we are tired, demotivated or have lost direction. We have worked so hard to reach at this level. What is going to take us to the next level ? Where are we headed ? We gathered enough money but now, somehow, i cant grow it further. Either i have got contended or i have just given up. Most of us will stop here and will never have enough courage to pick up the jug once again and start pouring the water in the glass. The jug of water still exists. There are ample opportunities outside to earn money and to strive for the next level. But, instead of trying harder, we would prefer to take the easy path and give all kind of excuses. I have personally heard excuses like - it is too late for me, i am trying my best, this is what God has in store for me, and some even go to the extent of saying that money does not buy you happiness, so why to chase it at all. Whatever be our excuse, you will find a selected few always picking up the jug once again and carrying on from here to become millionaires and billionaires. Were they born rich? No. Were they lucky? No. They just had enough courage every time they felt tired and directionless.

And what happened to these millionaires when they became billionaires? Were they more happy? I do not know. But one thing is sure that as the glass became full and as they had more money, they had the potential to change things around their society, country, world and humanity. They had a tool in their hands which has the potential to change the world, for better. Some of them, like Bill Gates and Azim Premji, actually took their spilled over pastic cars and handed over to others. These people are working with the sole purpose of improving the world around them, for the better. Do you have to be a CEO to do that? No. Are they the only ones? No, there are many more whom you may not have heard of. But you definitely can do much more for the society once your own glass is full. You will definitely have a better chance to start helping others if your glass is overflowing. The glass, once full, will automatically spill over and the water will be available for others to enjoy.

These are the same facts that you can apply in your life if you have to reach to the next level
1. Make sure you have enough courage during the middle of the journey to carry on to the next level. You may have to try new things, you may have to come out of your comfort zone, you may even have to go back and look at the bigger picture. But if you really want your life to make a difference to this world, you better get ready.
2. You will have to get your glass full. There are ample opportunities available. You must get financially free to make sure that your own glass gets full, before you start helping the society and the humanity around you. Once you are financially free and your glass gets full, the water will automatically start spilling over and will touch so many in need.

Nothing will happen of its own. Life will continue to carry on. You will have to get up and change the direction. I can assure you that you have the capability to do it. The only thing pending is a "Decision".

Cheers

Come out of Comfort Zone : A Tale of 2 seeds

Once upon a time, a person sowed two seeds in the lawn of his house. A few days passed by and the person took care of the seeds by giving them adequate water. After some time, one of the seeds was gathering all the courage and energy it needed to bust out of the earth's surface while the other was silently sitting behind and seeing what the first seed was attempting to do.

Dont be Frog in the Pan

While i was watching Satyamev jayate this Sunday on Television, i heard the host saying a very interesting story.

There was an experiment done by the scientists with a Frog. A live Frog was kept on one side. On the other side, there was a pan with boiling hot water. The Frog was taken and dipped in the pan with the boiling hot water. Guess what happened..The Frog immediately realized that it needs to do something, else it will not be able to survive in the pan's environment. It immediately jumped out of the pan.

However, the story does not end here. Now the next experiment was undertaken. The Frog was kept in another pan with the water in the pan being at room temperature. The Frog started enjoying being in this pan. It went on like this for about 30 min till the frog was extremely comfortable in the pan. Now the temperature of the water was increased very gradually. Though the Frog felt a little uncomfortable with the slowly rising temperature, it just could not gather enough courage or wisdom to come out of the pan. It made some half attempts also to come out but they were never like the big jump it made from a boiling pan. This went on for some time, till the frog eventually died within the pan because of the intolerable high temperature, never being able to take a decision to jump out of the pan.

We are all Frogs in this Rat Race (Pan), never being able to gather enough courage or wisdom to take a decision to come out of this race. Many of us, like that Frog, keep talking and thinking about taking that decision but never realize what we are losing while so many others are in such comfort zone that it is even painful to think that they can ever be financially free. A vast majority us have even stopped thinking about this aspect and do not even believe that such a freedom is ever possible in this lifetime. When i talk to my colleagues around my office and around my neighborhood, there are so many reasons that everyone has as to why this freedom cannot be achieved or is not meaningful enough. The whole point is that you got to act before it is too late and the temperature in the pan becomes intolerable.

I am here to tell you that it is possible to achieve financial freedom for you or for anyone who makes a commitment to go ahead and achieve the same. It is not tough. It needs planning, discipline and enough time to bear its results. Does it take ages? No, just 5-8 years. Does it need special skills? No. Does it need huge income? No. But you got to take the first step.

I would encourage each one of you not to be the frog in the pan and take a decision to come out of this pan before the time runs out for you. Time is not far when life will stare at you and ask a blunt question : What meaningful you achieved in this life time?. Lot of my friends also ask me that money is not everything. Yes, it is not everything but is a means to achieve so many things. Is Financial Freedom the end goal? No. It is a means to achieve what you really wanted to do as a human being but never ever enjoyed the freedom to do so.

Keep watching this blog and i can tell you step by step how to come out of this pan. I have done it myself and i know each step of it. The only issue is that my writings will make sense to you only if you have a strong reason to come out of this pan (your dream) and you are ready to sacrifice the comfort zone that you are in today to achieve something meaningful in life. I also know that only 1% population in this world will understand this and have enough courage to reach the end.

Take a decision, take the first step and rest all can be planned and executed.

Cheers !!

Do I need Freedom when life is going on just fine?

It was one of the typical chilly days in January month of the year. I was in US with my family. We were just about at dinner time when suddenly there is a family decision (typically family decisions means decisions taken by my wife and 2 lovely daughters) to go out to the Indian store about 3 miles from our house. Well, i did not get enough time or opportunity to repel against this decision and unwillingly, my hands automatically moved towards my car keys.

As we went along the small and beautiful drive from our house to the Indian Store, we saw shopping complexes and street shops on both sides of the road. This was Bentonville, a small laid back town in Arkansas state of USA. This was one place where we found lot of peace and relaxation after coming here from the neck breaking pace of a city like Delhi. Going to the India store in Bentonville was a weekly routine and it took us 5 to 7 minutes to reach there.

As we entered the store and got hold of our grocery trolley, kids had their routine fight on who will push the trolley and who will pick the grocery items from the store. While all this was going on, i suddenly happen to locate one of my office colleagues who looks stressed and drained out. He is done with his grocery collection from the store and is about to leave when we see each other face to face. Looking at his unusually stressed face, i am obviously curious to know if things are fine at his end. I end my curiosity by asking him about his well being.

Not wasting any time, he says "No, things are not fine". I go on to inquire further and he discloses some seriously disturbing facts. His father has been detected with a rare cancer in the last stage and the chances of his survival are not beyond a few months. Well, that would be a shocker of a news for anyone, especially if it is a sudden discovery. He goes on to say that his mother is also not keeping well and that he might have to travel back to India with his family soon.

His family (wife and kid) had just joined him in US. We had met together as families just a few weeks back. They are a beautiful couple and have an adorable 3 year old daughter. Moving the entire family back to India withing few months of settling in US in itself is quite a challenging move. But, in any case, these things dwarf out in front of the challenging family situation that stands tall in front of him.

The emotional setback apart, there is another thing that concerns this colleague and friend of mine. And that is obviously, the financial angle to the entire situation. He has got to fight for his fathers survival as long as he can, and this fight does not require any emotional moves. This requires "lots" of money. Chemo treatment, special medicines, doctors and hospital expenses, injections, movement of families from one country to another, unsettling and settling houses in each country etc etc. Health Insurance covers have an upper limit which easily gets crossed in such tricky situations. Going back to India would also mean that his income also goes down. His mind is majorly occupied thinking of all options to arrange for finances from somewhere so that he can look after his family in this time of crisis and provide the best possible medical treatment to his father.

Though he never expressed his financial need directly to me (we are close as families, i still happen to be his supervisor in office), it was coming out very obvious from his body language. Financial stress can be equally painful and disturbing, if not more, when compared to emotional stress that a person faces at such a stage of his or her life.

This is it !! This is THE point in life where you start valuing your Freedom (Financial). This is where you can take out your trump card. This is the point where you realize that financial freedom can be such a blessing in your life. It did not take me more than a split second to assure him that he can forget about all his financial worries and should focus on being with his family in India in this time of need. Could i have said this to anyone 5 years back..NO !!

Talking anything about whether he took any financial help from me or not would be completely missing the point here. The gush of bliss and satisfaction that i got after seeing his assured face in itself was so rewarding. How could i do that ? Why couldn't anyone else give him the same assurance as i gave. Not that anyone else was not willing or did not want to. It is just that everyone is so involved in the never ending struggle of their own lives that there is hardly and time and money left to give to someone else. This is one of those incidents which further strengthened my goal of financial freedom and made me believe that i am on the right path. This made me believe that i must not stay in mediocrity and must continue to find my way to freedom. This was reason enough for me to go through whatever pain is needed to be financially free.

So many of us are so comfortable in the situation where we are today. We are earning enough (or so we feel). We fail to come out of the comfort zone and achieve something of true significance in our lives. Rat Race becomes a part of life and Financial Freedom a mere wish.

Wake up ladies and gentlemen, there is a way to move to the other side. There is a way to move From Rat Race to Financial Freedom. You would never know when you would need it. If not you, someone close to you definitely needs it and you owe it to them.

Cheers !!
